First of all, talk about a sweet location: the heart of downtown Austin. You’re within walking distance of the Convention Center, as well as several happening attractions.

For those of you staying in the Radisson, the Fitness Center is open until 11 pm daily, and features Cybex cardio equipment, exercise balls, free-standing weights and overlooks the pool (coincidentally the largest outdoor in downtown Austin) and Town Lake.

Get Steppin’ – Some Cool Places to Walk About

South Congress: This hip strip epitomizes Austin’s weirdness. It features an array of trendy retail stores, eclectic boutiques (check out Uncommon Objects at 1512 South Congress), thrift shops, music venues, galleries, restaurants and food trucks. Drop by the South Congress Café for brunch and some top quality people watching. (South Congress Ave., Johanna to Gibson Streets, about 15 min. drive or 25 min. bus ride from the Radisson)

Renaissance Artists’ Market: The only continuously operated open-air crafts market in the U.S. offers a wide variety of unique items for sale by local artists, including jewelry, photography, art, apparel, leather goods and more! (Open 7 days a week, 23rd St. and Guadalupe across from the University of Texas campus, about a 7 min. drive or of 40 min. walk from the Radisson)

Historic Walking Tours: If you’re looking to learn about Austin’s rich past, meet at the south entrance of the Capitol building for a free guided walking tour of downtown. Make a reservation 48 hours in advance to secure your spot on a 9 am tour Tues., Thurs., Fri. or Sat. or you can go on Sunday at 11 am or 1 pm. Download the brochure here.

Grab Some Healthy Grub

P. Terry Burger Stand: Healthy Fast Food?! You better believe it! The “Never Been Better” P. Terry’s offers an assortment of 100% natural beef patties, veggie and egg burgers, chicken breast, fresh cut fries prepared in 100% canola oil, and even whole wheat bun/lettuce wrapped options. Their fresh squeezed orange juice and lemonade are wonderfully refreshing but I’d encourage you to treat yourself to a vanilla, double chocolate, or root beer milkshake. (404 S Lamar Blvd, about a 3 min. drive or 25 min walk from the Radisson)

Counter Culture: Counter Culture offers meatless, dairy-free and raw foods, made from scratch and priced affordably. Taste any of their specials (I recommend the quiche of the day), various appetizers, salads, sandwiches, plates & handmade desserts. Although vegan doesn’t always mean healthy, CC emphasizes nutritious, unprocessed foods. Drop by for breakfast or brunch and some bottomless hot tea. (2337 E Cesar Chavez St, about a 4 min. drive or 35 min walk from the Radisson)

Koriente: Asian Fusion. Calorie and nutrition conscious, most of Koriente’s dishes are low in oil and sugar and all are made with the freshest ingredients. Customize your meal with brown or white rice, tofu or chicken, or choose from any of their mouth-watering entrees (I recommend the panseared ahi tuna with avocado slices). Take advantage of their complementary miso soup and don’t leave without tasting the Daydream Sundae –green tea ice cream topped with pistachios and honey! (621 E 7th St., a 2 min. drive or 15 min walk from Radisson)

Fun with the Kiddos

Austin’s Children Museum: A great place to bring your kids (especially the little ones) for hands on, interactive play and learning. With a three-level Funstruction Zone, bat cave, train and grocery stations it feels more like a playground than a museum. Avoid the crowds by heading over in the afternoon, unless you have a toddler, in which case get there in the morning for the Baby Bloomers program. (201 Colorado St, a 4 min walk from the Radisson)

Central MarketThe flagship Central Market is a great place to shop and browse around for top quality produce. It offers picnic tables for covered outdoor dining and two expansive playscapes for the children to explore, one for the 5+ group and the other for toddlers. There are also great spots for adults to talk, relax, and listen to great live music by local performers. (4001 N Lamar Blvd, a 10 min. drive or 10 min bus ride from the Radisson)

Other Great Spots to Check Out

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, located at the Ritz, is possibly the coolest theater I’ve ever been to. It offers movies, comedy (Master Pancake), and a wait staff that serves dinner and drinks throughout the evening. With reserved seating, you won’t need to stand in line, but get there early to peruse the menu and enjoy the weird clips before the movie. Leave the kids and your phones at home because this is a one-of-a-kind movie experience you won’t want interrupted. Make sure to buy your tickets online in advance. (409 Colorado St, about an 8 min. walk from the Radisson)

Ziiker Park: Sprawl out on its luscious fields or join a game of pickup volleyball, soccer or ultimate Frisbee. Also feel free to take a dip in its Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed pool with a year-round average temperature of 68 degrees.

Town Lake and JuiceLand: Town Lake Trail is a beautiful spot for a walk, run, bike ride, soaking up some Texas sun and taking in the Austin skyline; JuiceLand is the spot to grab something refreshing to drink or eat afterward. JuiceLand offers yummy smoothies, some very interesting combos, and a friendly, hippie staff to help you navigate their overwhelming ingredient list. Bring along some Innergize! or ProVantage and have them mix it in for you! (2307 Lake Austin Blvd, about 2 miles from the Radisson straight down the Town Lake Trail)
