4 Strength Training Tips Everyone Should Know

By Fit3 Head Coach Tina Van Horn

For many people, turning 40 can be a dreaded milestone. For the health and fitness conscientious, however, turning 30 could be considered the new 40.

Why 30, you may ask? From the time you were born until around the time you turn 30, your muscles grow larger and stronger. But during your 30s, you naturally start to lose muscle mass and function. This is called sarcopenia or “muscle loss with aging.”

The good news? Muscle-strengthening activities help increase or maintain your muscle mass and power. Steadily increasing weight and repetitions will give you even more benefits, no matter your age.

That’s why, if you haven’t already, it’s time to get serious about adding strength training to your workouts. I know machines at the gym can be confusing, so don’t even look at the intimidating guys (and ladies) who hang out in the free weights area!

Strength training for most of us isn’t about bulking up and getting ripped. (Sure, having defined muscles would be nice but isn’t very realistic when you live in the “real world” and eat “real food.”) It’s really about building lean muscle mass that supports a healthy metabolism and promotes functional fitness.

Just Do It

You don’t have to go to the gym and lift super heavy weights to get the benefits of resistance training. But you do have to do something!

Strength training can be approached lots of ways: Fast and intense, slow and easy, or somewhere in between. You can do full-body sessions or upper/lower body splits. You can change grip, feet position or equipment. The main thing is to keep it enjoyable and experiment with your fitness goals.

Resistance training for muscle gain

Examples of resistance training that promotes muscle growth include the use of free weights, weight machines, resistance bands and your own body weight.

Here are my 4 favorite tips:

  • Train just two or three times per week to give your muscles time to recover. If you’re tempted to train more often, remember that muscle growth occurs during recovery.
  • Choose compound exercises that work multiple major muscle groups, for example, the squat and bench press.
  • Make your workouts short and intense rather than long and leisurely.
  • Seek professional advice. A gym instructor, personal trainer, exercise physiologist or physiotherapist will help make sure you are doing each exercise correctly. Good advice will increase your gains and reduce your risk of injury.

Q&A with Reliv Chairman and CEO Robert L. Montgomery

QABob-web

As company founder, Robert L. Montgomery has been at the helm of Reliv since the very beginning. We sat down with Bob to discuss what’s happening at Reliv right now and what we can expect to see in the years to come.

Q. Reliv’s theme in 2015 is “The Power of You.” Why do you think it’s so important for people to take control of their own lives?

Personal freedom. That’s really what we’re all working toward, isn’t it? Either you can make the choices you want to make in life or you can have someone else make those choices for you. I sure know which way I prefer. Continue reading “Q&A with Reliv Chairman and CEO Robert L. Montgomery”

Reliv Personal Websites: A Q&A with Chris Scherting

SubscribeButton-web

PWS-web

Chris Scherting, Reliv’s Director of Marketing, answers questions regarding the new personal websites that were launched on May 6, 2015.

What makes these websites so useful?

Reliv’s personal websites (PWS) are mobile-ready. They offer built-in responsive design which means they respond to any device, whether you are looking at it on a small or large phone, horizontal or vertical, tablet, etc. The fact that they are mobile ready allows the site to have two primary purposes. One is that it is a tool you take with you every single day. You can play a video, make a presentation, sign someone up, they can order product or you can take their contact information in the lead form. It’s just one tap away when you create a bookmark on the home page of your device. The other aspect is it is a normal website on the internet where you can send people to visit it at their leisure. They can take action right away and order product or sign up on their own.

What makes these personal websites different from Reliv.com?

We call them your “personal websites,” so we’ve given Distributors more ways to personalize their websites. They can upload multiple photos or stories, they can change the four home page icons to select pages they want to highlight, and they can choose their own featured products. It is a personal website that you can personalize yourself and how you like to present the Reliv story.

How do you expect this to impact business?

If Distributors put a bookmark to their PWS on their smartphone and their tablet, and they use this everyday while talking to people about Reliv, it will help them build their business. This is a tool that inserts itself into the stages of identify, connect and share the story. You still need to make your list and find people who don’t know about Reliv. This is just one more tool to help you tell them about Reliv.

What are you the most proud about regarding this website design?

One, the entire marketing department had something to do with these sites. I am so proud of everyone and all of their hard work to write, design, program, build and test the sites. We have an amazing team here working to support Distributor’s success. So the biggest thing I will be proud of is when I hear the Distributors using the sites to build their business, I see check totals go up, people start advancing and we fill the stage at International Conference with new Ambassadors!

What support would I, as a Distributor, have from Headquarters?

As with anything regarding Reliv, our Distributor Services Center (DSC) offers live phone support. They can answer any questions ranging from how to upload a picture to your story to questions about specific products and ordering. They are there for you and willing to help! The number is 1-800-735-4887.

Special Offer: Right now, all Master Affiliates get the Reliv Web Bundle — your personal website plus Distributor Dashboard to track your business — FREE for your first 3 months. The bundle is regularly just $15/month.

Reliv Week of Caring 2015: Another Huge Success

SubscribeButton-webWeek of Caring Collage

By Reliv Vice President of Operations, Debra Hellweg

Another successful year of the Reliv Week of Caring has now come to a conclusion! For the past 7 years, during one designated week each year, we send groups of employees to charities throughout the St. Louis area to volunteer for the day. This year during the week of April 13th we visited the Youth in Need Organization, Open Door Animal Sanctuary, Habitat for Humanity and the ALS Association. Approximately 25% of our workforce in the US participated – we have a tremendous participation rate year after year! We not only volunteer our time, but also often times employees bring donations or help in other ways. Some highlights from this year’s events include:

  • In addition to helping care for the hundreds of animals at the Open Door Animal Sanctuary, we also raised approximately $250 (all from employee donations) for this wonderful no-kill animal rescue organization. Additionally, one of our employees adopted one of the homeless dogs! It was a truly successful day indeed.
  • Employees volunteering to help the ALS Foundation had the privilege to work directly with a family affected by ALS at their home. In speaking with several of these employees, they all agreed this was truly a rewarding experience for all.
  • Youth in Need is a wonderful organization that helps at-risk teens and children. Our employees were able to help the organization with much-needed work in one of their gardens that the kids play in. The head of the volunteer efforts for that organization personally reached out to us afterwards and could not have been more grateful for all the help our employees gave them.
  • Habitat for Humanity is an organization we choose to support each year because we can contribute directly to the future home of someone in need.

The list goes on and on of the assistance this one week of each year provides to local charities. We have even been recognized outside the Reliv world for these efforts. We have won multiple Communitas Awards for “Excellence in Community Service” for our Week of Caring. Communitas Awards specifically recognize “exceptional businesses that give of themselves and their resources to benefit their communities.” Last year the Association of Marketing & Communications Professionals (who issue the Communitas Awards) featured us in a special AMCP blog as an example of a company giving back. We have also been featured in numerous local publications in St. Louis.

Since we started this initiative back in 2009, we have volunteered our time at 18 different local charities (many we have visited multiple times) and volunteered more than 1,400 hours of service! That is absolutely incredible when you think about all those in need that we possibly helped during all those hours. I am truly privileged to be part of this volunteer effort and greatly appreciate working for a company that allows us to do this during work hours! We say it all the time, but Reliv truly is a company with a heart!
