On October 22, the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois hosted a special informational presentation featuring Dr. Alfredo Galvez, chief scientific advisor at SL Technology, a Reliv company. During his visit Dr. Galvez had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Elvira de Mejia, UI Professor and leading food science researcher. The video above features highlights from their discussion.
The University of Illinois has been a hub for research identifying the health benefits of bioactive food components, with a strong emphasis on the lunasin peptide. Over the last decade, Dr. de Mejia has contributed to more than 23 published papers validating the presence, bioavailability and biological activity of lunasin. According to a recent study led by de Mejia, lunasin works in the body to protect cells by reducing the negative effects of oxidative stress and by regulating the body’s inflammatory response. These mechanisms suggest lunasin may offer long-term cell protection when consumed regularly.
“Lunasin is an extraordinary nutritional compound with solid clinical data behind it,” said Galvez. “Its proven ability to work at the epigenetic level explains its wide-ranging health benefits and offers the opportunity to transform the way we look at nutrition and health care. It was a privilege to discuss the science behind lunasin with my colleagues at the University of Illinois, whose pioneering work has been instrumental in advancing the field of nutritional epigenetics.”
Accidental Discovery, Big Benefits
Dr. Galvez first discovered lunasin in 1996 during research at UC Berkley to improve the nutritional profile of soy protein. More than 80 peer-reviewed and published studies from more than 30 research institutions — including important work at the University of Illinois — have documented lunasin’s health benefits, which include:
- Cholesterol management
- Inflammation reduction
- Antioxidant benefits
- Improved immunity
- Overall cellular health

This video offers highly credible testimony about validation of 1) the relationship between inflammation, oxidative stress and chronic disease and 2) the role of lunasin in managing inflammation and oxidative stress thru lowering genetic markers of these. The video is also a great visual reinforcement of the high level & quality of research that is going into Lunasin. Thank you for this video and text!

My husband functions on 40% on one lung and 20% on the other. We started ReLiv in May,2014
and after 3 months went to his lung doctor who could not believe he could actually hear AIR going
through his lungs. He was so happy and said he could not wait to tell twelve (12) other doctors
in his goup of lung doctors of the good news. I told him I attribute it to ReLiv. We will be going
back in another month or so and I pray that things are getting better for my husband.
Everyone says he looks better but he still cannot walk far or any length without stopping for more
air from his oxygen tank..

Mrs. Moore, you’re saying that your husband looks better but still can’t do anything. That needs more explanation.
Thanks.

My question about Lunasin is this: do you know in which food group Lunasin might be found in its natural state? It just seems logical that if it is in soy, then diets that are rich in soy should also be rich in Lunasin.

Hi John! Lunasin is naturally present in soy and some cereal grains, such as barley, rye and amaranth.
The amount of bioavailable lunasin in these natural sources varies considerably, depending not only on the actual source, but also on the specific seed variety, growing and harvest conditions, as well as processing methods after harvest.
Specifically regarding soy, most processing methods used to concentrate or isolate the soy protein significantly decreases the amount of bioavailable lunasin that remains in the soy protein.
We use sources of soy with the highest levels of naturally-occurring lunasin to produce LunaRich soy powder and LunaRich X. We also use only mechanical and natural extraction methods that ensure the integrity and bioavailability of the lunasin is protected.
